How we got started...
The Highland Community Support Network was founded by Nancy Nicholas, a Sharon Elementary teacher. When a child in her class confided that the family didn't have enough food to eat, Mrs. Nicholas found herself in a difficult position. Knowing that many of the families in the classroom would be happy to help out, but being unable to tell them, she needed a different solution. She came up with the plan to create an email list serve where needs could be posted without breaching confidentiality or embarrasing the family that needed help. She invited 20 parents that she had known over her teaching career to join her, and HCSN was born.
Mrs. Nicholas served as the coordinator for the community support and was soon joined by a group of teachers (including her husband, Jeff Nicholas) who became the contacts and donation drop off coordinators for the Network.
Who we are now...
Mrs. Cathy Wilhelm, a Highland Middle School teacher, took over as the coordinator for the Highland Community Support Network in 2006, and is still serving in this position today.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the early members and those who joined later on, the Network's membership has grown to over 100 people and helped countless families in the Highland Community.
An executive committee consisting of several teachers and community members was formed in 2005, working together to help HCSN run smoothly.
